Dear Soul,

The Gayatri Mantra is one of the most ancient and revered Mantras that is taught within the Vedic and Yoga traditions. It originates in the Rig Veda, and is a powerful spiritual tool for accessing wisdom and higher levels of intelligence.

The Mantra describes the Sun as a source of light that is ‘worthy of worship’. The Sun – that indicator of the Self, bearer of spiritual knowledge, the symbol of the seat of personal power, and the light and fire that gives us the will to live, achieve and transform. The Mantra does not seek magical boons or instant gifts from a mythical divine source. Instead, it asks that our thoughts be illuminated by the light of wisdom. That our ability to access higher levels of wisdom be strenghtened.

The study of this mantra was passed down from teacher to disciple in ancient Vedic India, and there were stipulated regulations around how it was to be recited. Today, with the text freely translated and available to everyone, it is a fairly well-known and commonly recited Mantra, but the import of its meaning is not always understood fully. As with all forms of ancient knowledge, it is important to be acquainted with its authentic pronunciation, as well as the intent of the Mantra before chanting it.

The recitation of the Gayatri Mantra can be a profound accompaniment to the beginning or conclusion of a Yoga session, and opens the mind to the universal field of creative intelligence that is represented by Surya or the Sun in Vedic thought.

The name of the Mantra, Gayatri, means ‘that which liberates the one who sings/recites it’.
Here are the lyrics to the Gayatri Mantra, both in Sanskrit (Devanagari) and in the Roman script:
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

Om Bhuur-Bhuvah Svah
Tat-Savitur-Varennyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhiimahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Pracodayaat ||

Meaning: I meditate upon the divine effulgence of the Sun who is worthy of worship, and who pervades the three levels of loka (planes of existence), from physical to subtle. May that awaken our inner intelligence.

I encourage you to experience the profound power of the Gayatri Mantra as a tool of meditation, as well as protection during times of collective disturbances. I was initiated in to its recitation as a child, and am aware of the many times it has given comfort, clarity and a deeper awareness.

May the radiant light of Surya illuminate our thoughts and minds.
.
With love and peace,

Sai Ganesh Nagpal
