In Vedic philosophy, it is said that a person with refined intelligence – “Sudheehi” – is one who truly relishes the essence of knowledge, at a level deeper than just the ‘collection of information’. The recommended approach to gaining knowledge is likened to the search for ‘rasa‘ – an “essence” that is experienced as a flavor, an aesthetic or subtle appreciation, often cultivated through literary, visually-creative or musical endeavours.
In this approach, the memorisation of texts and verses is not considered to be as important as opening to the layers of wisdom contained within the verses, and in the silences between them. “Rasa” is the flavour that is retained after – an inner depth of ‘feeling’ that draws, motivates and inspires the Self at the core of one’s being.
The name Sarasvati means ‘one who flows‘, her nature is to bring this awareness of ‘rasa‘ in to the world through evolutionary thought, rooted in time-honoured wisdom.
The Swan or ‘Hansa‘ is associated with Sarasvati, and is known for its elegance and refinement. In the Vedic texts, ‘Hansa’ is given an important place as a symbol of knowledge. Therefore, the title of ‘Paramahansa‘ or ‘Supreme Swan‘ for one who is awakened on the path of Yoga.
