The Full Moon of ‘Guru Purnima‘ occurs during the Moon’s transit through the Ashadha Nakshatra constellations that are associated with knowledge, wisdom and the promise of overcoming challenges by applying what is learned in a practical way. Their great power is to cultivate wisdom, and to shine its light through time.
This Full Moon is perhaps one of the most significant days of the year, according to the Vedic lunar calendar, on which to nurture gratitude for those who have held the space of a high teacher, mentor or spiritual light in our lives.
Gratitude opens our awareness to an expansive way of thinking and living. We are constantly held, nourished and supported by an ecosystem of those who are both known and unknown to us. Among those who are dear to us, we might especially remember through time, with great reverence, those who have lit a lamp of wisdom on the path, often at crucial junctures. The Teachings leave a lasting and profound impression upon the heart.
The Mantra “Om Sri Gurubhyo Namaha” is a beautiful one to recite on this Full Moon day, or even on Thursdays during the week. A Guru may come in to one’s life as a spiritual Master/Teacher whom the heart feels deeply drawn to, and yet ultimately, the ‘Guru principle’ represents a light of wisdom that transcends name and form.
Many of the Great Teachers through the ages of time, have spoken of finding peace within, irrespective of external circumstances. The world, known as jagat in Sanskrit, which means ‘constantly moving’, is always in a state of rapid change. The teachings emphasise that now is the time, this is the moment, to find peace within.
A river of peace, which is ‘ever true’, ‘always aware’ and ‘eternally blissful’ – ‘Sat-Chit-Ananda’ – flows within as the true Self.
I have found Mantra Yoga to be a powerful practice that brings the awareness back to the flow of peace within. I’d like to share with you my rendition of the Shanti Mantra, revered Peace Mantras from the Vedic scriptures. These beautiful chants affirm peace for all beings, on Earth, in the skies, in the waters, and asks for all beings to have the opportunity to be peaceful in this life.
With love and peace,
Sai Ganesh Nagpal
