The bird ‘Garuda’ in the Hindu tradition is the Vaahana (mount) of Lord Vishnu who guides the preservation and maintanence of life, and regulates the flow of life energy.

In the Vedic tradition, birds are symbolic of the element of ‘Vayu’ (air) – the wind upon which they fly. They also represent the ‘Panca Pranas’ – the five vital breaths that every living being possesses.

To show kindness towards birds. and to allow them to thrive in their natural environment, is seen as a great Seva (service). By honouring the birds, we honour the life-giving Vayu (air element) that sustains us.

When great devotees have called upon Lord Vishnu, he appears mounted upon the bird Garuda, and he grants his devotees ‘Moksha’ or ‘liberation’ from suffering. The bird’s flight above the mundane world represents the ability to transcend bondage and suffering.

Through this life, we forever seek new spaces, new horizons to explore, new ways in which to define and redefine ourselves. In many ways, we aspire to the freedom that a bird possesses.

Ancient bird symbols often represent a cosmic guide who appears to show us our path in this life and beyond. When we cage or otherwise harm these carriers of cosmic energy, we inhibit our own spiritual growth and inner freedom.

The ancient teachings had an understanding of the ways in which spirit was infused in to all beings, and our relationship with them would determine the health of our own existence upon this planet.

I often look to birds that show up unannounced as messengers from another realm. Many ancient tales and legends have a bird that speaks to humans. They represent a bridge between the earth and the voice of the higher realms.
