We approach the joyous weekend of Diwali, the festival of lights that marks the New Moon in the lunar month of Karthik according to the Vedic lunar calendar. This is a special time to create the intention for a resurgence of wisdom, wellness and prosperity for the Earth.
Diwali or Deepawali is a time of lighting the lamp of wisdom, of celebrating the eternal flame of Ananda or bliss consciousness that resides within the individual, one that we continuously seek to know through our spiritual practices.
Deepawali literally means a ‘row of earthen lamps‘, and Vedic history has different stories for the celebration of this festival. One of them is the return of Sri Rama and Sita to the kingdom of Ayodhya thousands of years ago, after Rama was victorious over the Asura forces.
When the light of Consciousness is illuminated in the home of the Self, there is an awakening that we experience as clarity, as joy, as Ananda (bliss) and the blossoming of new beginnings.
Wherever you are in the world, I welcome you to light your earthen lamp or candle on the night of Diwali this year – November 14th, 2020, and renew a prayer for prosperity for all, for healing in this world.
The following Sanskrit chant is a universal and powerful affirmation of this noble intention, for the individual and the collective. Sharing with you the Sanskrit lyrics to the chant as well as the English meaning.
Join me this 14th of November as we light earthen lamps and candles for peace and well-being for all!
ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय ।
तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।
मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय ।
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
Om Asato Maa Sad-Gamaya |
Tamaso Maa Jyotir-Gamaya |
Mrtyor-Maa Amrtam Gamaya |
Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih ||
Lead me from untruth towards the truth of the Self,
Lead me from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge,
Lead me from the realm of mortality towards the nectar of immortality.
~ Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
