Guru Purnima – the day of the Full Moon in the Vedic lunar month of Ashadha (solar month of July), is dedicated to honouring the teachers, both known and unknown, who tirelessly hold space for seekers to learn, imbibe and grow on the path.

This Full Moon is a special moment in the year – a time to pause, reflect, and offer gratitude to the source of wisdom. The word Guru means ‘one who dispels darkness’. As the Moon traverses the stars of Sagittarius, this day is astrologically one of the most powerful times to honour not only teachers and mentors, but also to acknowledge and celebrate the spark of a Cosmic Light that shines within – the silent inner Guru.

Whether guidance on the path comes through a living teacher, a sacred text, the notes of music, or the quiet voice of intuition, Guru Purnima is a reminder that we are never truly alone on this journey. When we pause to honour the source of our wisdom, we might realise how many traditions, teachers, luminaries, experiences and moments have all contributed to bringing us closer to discovering our potential.

In spite of the powerful individual identities we create, the fleeting nature of life gently reminds us that we are but custodians of a timeless consciousness, one that expresses itself through the body, mind, and intellect.

It is no wonder, then, that often find ourselves yearning for a quality, an experience, something that transcends the boundaries of our perceived limitations. At a deeper level of the ‘Self’, there exists an innate longing to break free. To know, not just believe, the truth of who we are.

Upon this earnest journey of self-discovery and self-mastery, inner clarity becomes a quiet yet unwavering guide… a light that illuminates the path from within.  The Grace of the Guru is gently felt and experienced as the peace that comes from inner clarity.

Guru Purnima can be a profound day to commit to a journey of studying something you have always wanted to, for your own inner growth. If you are a student of Yoga, this is also a good day to renew your commitment to a deeper study of texts of Yogic philosophy, such as the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, Yoga Sutras, the Mahabharata or the Ramayana.

May this Guru Purnima renew our connection to the source – the light behind every note, every breath, every offering.
